Kathryn Deane

 

Kathryn Deane was director of Sound Sense, the UK association for community musicians until her retirement in late 2016. There, she led and contributed to advocacy, practice development, and professional development activities ranging from the National Singing Programme for primary age children, through co‑hosting the largest International Society for Music Education’s community music commission seminar, to A Choir in Every Care Home (Baring Foundation), a finalist at the Royal Society of Public Health Awards 2017.

Kathryn’s writings include Community Music Today, published by Rowman and Littlefield, and the Oxford Handbook of Community Music (OUP). She was an editorial board member of the International journal of community music; and edited Sounding Board, the UK journal of community music, for 84 issues. Her appointments include lifetime Vice President of Voluntary Arts (2014); and Visiting Professor at York St John University (2016). In 2017 she won the Editor’s Award in the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence.
