Dr Michael Davidson is a postdoctoral researcher at SOAS, exploring the application of ethnomusicology to music education. His practice-based PhD ‘Citizens of Here: Towards an Inclusive Instrumental Music Teaching in England’ draws on citizenship as a lens to development of music services in England’.
Michael’s postdoctoral work develops Citizens of Here, networks of music education practitioners informed by ethnomusicology. One project explores the benefits and challenges of developing a new A level music fit for the 21st Century.
In his former work as a development officer for a music education hub, Michael initiated and ran musical inclusion:
- Family music projects
- Intergenerational music projects,
- Projects for children in challenging circumstances.
- Projects for adult mental health services users
- Youth-led Informal music progression pathways
- Creative music progression pathways
- Communities of Practice for Instrumental music teachers
- Equality Diversity and Inclusion working groups.
Michael plays music for dancing, and runs workshops at festivals, conferences and for music education hubs.
