Pauline Black is a musician, educator and researcher committed to teaching and leading participatory music initiatives, fostering performance, creative practice and engagement in the fields of education and community music. She is Deputy Principal of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Orkney, Scotland and subject tutor for PGCE Music at UHI. With thirty years of experience across schools, community settings, higher education and the music industry, Pauline has held a range of musical, academic and management roles. She was formerly Head of Music and Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, leading the music education programme for a considerable time. As a presenter, guest speaker and workshop leader, Pauline has worked nationally and internationally and across educational contexts. She was President of the Independent Society of Musicians (2023-2024). Pauline is a multi-instrumentalist and performs as a trumpet player and singer with a variety of ensembles. Her research focuses on routes into jazz and improvised music; collaborative composing with technology; creative learning; gender equity in music; informal music making and identities in music.
