Dr Laura Curtis

Laura Curtis has been a music educator for the last twenty years. Since 2004, she has established herself as a self-employed private instructor of voice, piano, and music theory. She is a lecturer in Music Education at Western University in London, Ontario, and Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario. Laura also holds the position of Music Director of the Addison Women’s Choir in Cambridge, Ontario, and enjoys her roles with Choral Canada as a member of the advocacy committee, and with the Orangeville and District Music Festival as an organizing committee member.

Laura holds a PhD in Music Education from Western University, a Diploma in music performance (voice) from Cambrian College (2004), an Honours Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, from McMaster University (2016), and a master’s degree in music performance from Western University (2018).

Laura’s doctoral research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, focused on the ways in which involuntarily childless women experience community and develop self-empowerment through singing in the Childless Voice Choir in the UK. Her research interests include the social and affective impact of collective singing on individuals and groups who experience marginalization and oppression, the impact of infertility on the female voice, and lifelong musical learning.
